    "The New York Post reported today, that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has got himself into controversy making a racially charged statement. The mayor made a statement suggesting that police stop and frisk whites too often and do not stop and frisk minorities often enough.

    You have seen movies like ?The Heat.? But you?ve never seen a movie quite like ?The Heat.?

    Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star in "The Heat," which is perhaps the first-ever buddy cop movie starring two women.

    The buddy cop comedy, opening Friday and starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, features a familiar plot, but a new twist. The buddies are both women.

    These are not women who brunch and talk about their guy troubles or dream of getting married, or are planning pregnancy. These are tough single women who live for their law enforcement jobs and curse. Well, one does. McCarthy?s Det. Mullins is vulgar and wild and relishes making others uncomfortable. Bullock?s FBI Agent Ashburn is arrogant, uptight and doesn?t have much of a sense of humor. If they remind you of the guys in ?Lethal Weapon? or ?48 Hours,? you?re not alone.

    ?It?s just a fun comedy that you can swap two men for the women, and in that way it?s remarkable,? said Yael Kohen, author of ?We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy.? ?It really is a very risky movie and exciting in a way. It?s not high-brow like ?Bridesmaids,? which also had an undercurrent of how women behave and relate. This movie doesn?t have any of that.?

    When ?Bridesmaids? became a box-office smash in 2011, earning $300 million worldwide, critics declared it the beginning of a new era for women in leading roles. But two years later, most of the comedic roles for women are still of the romantic variety, with a sweet actress paired up with a leading man. ?The Heat,? which was directed by "Bridesmaids" Paul Feig, has now inherited the pressure. Even before the film hit theaters, screenwriter Katie Dippold (?Parks and Recreation?) was put to work on a sequel.

    ?At the end of the day, it?s a money question,? Kohen said. ?If ?The Heat,? does well, you?re more likely to see more (female buddie comedies) and you?re more likely to see the sequel.?

    Comedies with two leading ladies were more popular in the 1980s than they are now, Kohen points out. Bette Midler starred in ?Outrageous Fortune" with Shelley Long in 1987 and in ?Big Business? with Lily Tomlin in 1988. That same year, Rebecca De Mornay and Mary Gross starred in what could have gone down in history as the first female buddy comedy but ?Feds? was a flop so no one remembers it. ?Thelma and Louise? in 1991 broke ground for women in film and had comedic elements though it was essentially a drama.

    But, recently, Hollywood has been more apt to pair someone like Kate Hudson with Gael Garcia Bernal than with a female protagonist. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler stood out in 2008 when they starred in ?Baby Mama,? which won its opening weekend and grossed $60 million worldwide. But there hasn?t been a lead comedy female duo since.

    ?Hollywood thinks that men aren?t going to be interested in seeing the two women on the big screen,? Kohen said. ?They always want a leading man to help the woman open a movie. If ?The Heat,? doesn?t do well, I don?t think it?s necessarily that two women can?t open a movie. It could just be that people are not interested in that particular movie. But we know that?s not how it?s going to be viewed.?

    "Heat" screenwriter Dippold, 33, told Kohen in an interview in Marie Claire that she wasn?t thinking about gender barriers or Hollywood tropes when she wrote the script. Growing up, she loved ?Running Scared? and ?Lethal Weapon,? and says, ?I always felt like those guys, the buddy cops, were so cool and badass and funny, and I always wanted to see two women like that.?

    In that same vein, Bullock told Marie Claire that she was attracted to the script because Dippold did not restrict her character?s behavior according to gender expectations. "Katie wrote a story that required two human beings to be uncensored and not mind looking like idiots, something both women and men do on a daily basis,? Bullock said.

    Bullock must have really liked what she read. Both she and McCarthy signed on to star in the movie just 10 days after Chernin Entertainment bought the script for $600,000. The movie is opening at record speed, only 20 months after Dippold completed the script. But even with such positive buzz, there?s still plenty of doubt among studio executives about whether two women can open an action buddy comedy, Kohen said.

    ?It?s hard enough to prove that one woman can open a movie let alone a duo,? Kohen said. ?It?s very ballsy for a movie to do and for a studio to make that decision. Executives are usually concerned with whether the audience will be overly estrogenized with two women in the lead. Well, ?The Heat? certainly is not that.?

    Obama meets privately with Mandela family

    JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are meeting privately with the family of Nelson Mandela.

    The meeting is taking place at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, which is part of the former South African president's foundation.

    The White House didn't say which Mandela family members the Obamas are meeting with.

    The president and first lady will not meet with the ailing 94-year-old Mandela, who is hospitalized with a lung infection. The White House says that decision was made in accordance with the Mandela family's wishes.

    UBS commits to home market with Zurich HQ revamp

    ZURICH (Reuters) - UBS will spend more than 100 million Swiss francs ($105.42 million) on a facelift of its Zurich headquarters, hoping to turn the building into a buzzing retail area on one of Europe's most exclusive shopping streets.

    The Swiss bank is splashing out as other European banks are tightening their belts on real estate, as they cut bloated balance sheets, slash jobs and reconsider the cost of occupying prime locations amid a downturn in business.

    On Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse, rental space commands roughly 9,000 Swiss francs ($9,500) per square meter, according to estimates compiled by real estate firm Wuest & Partner, making it among Europe's most expensive property.

    Many Swiss private banks, which have offices in the area, see that as money well spent as they target the same clientele shopping at luxury vendors such as Gucci and Prada which fill Bahnhofstrasse.

    Zurich architects EM2N have been commissioned to gut UBS's stone-pillared headquarters, built in 1916, and adapt the buildings immediately surrounding it for rent as shops and cafes, in a project expected to last more than two years.

    The grand entrance at No. 45 Bahnhofstrasse, where tellers serve clients in a marble-lined hall, is listed so will only undergo a minimal revamp when work begins in 2015.

    "We are setting an attractive urban accent in the middle of Zurich and we see this as a further commitment to our home market," UBS's operating chief Ulrich Koerner said in a statement.

    UBS is at pains to play up its Swiss roots after abandoning riskier parts of its investment bank, which has produced a series of scandals including a $1.5 billion penalty for manipulating Libor and other benchmark interest rates.

    During the renovation, roughly 650 UBS bankers including Chief Executive Sergio Ermotti will move from the Bahnhofstrasse site, between luxury boutiques Chanel and Cartier, to other office space the Swiss bank owns nearby.

    Industry heavyweights UBS, Credit Suisse and Julius Baer dominate Bahnhofstrasse.

    Swiss private bank Clariden Leu, with roots back to 1755, has been the highest profile bank to disappear from Bahnhofstrasse, after the brand disappeared when the bank was integrated into Credit Suisse, its parent.

    Many employees at UBS headquarters will be moved into Europaallee, a new development near Zurich's train station which seeks to revitalize the city's seedier area with bars, shops and office space. ($1 = 0.9486 Swiss francs)

    HTC posts kernel source code for One Google Play edition

    Officially, the HTC One Google Play edition exists for tinkering with an unfettered Android experience. Owners need the code to do that, of course -- and HTC has quickly followed up by posting the kernel source code for its Sense-free phone. The release helps developers optimize their apps for the hardware, modify its vanilla Android 4.2 build and produce custom firmware. If you have one of those goals in mind, the kernel source is ready to download at HTC's developer portal.

    (AP) ? Back in her comfort zone on Centre Court, Serena Williams delivered an overpowering statement: When her serve is clicking, she's the woman to beat at Wimbledon.

    Putting aside her recent comments that led to a couple of apologies and a brief spat with Maria Sharapova, Williams looked every bit the five-time champion. She began her Wimbledon title defense with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mandy Minella of Luxembourg.

    "For me, it's the greatest moment for a tennis player, to walk out on Centre Court," Williams said after her first match at Wimbledon since winning the Olympic gold medal there last year. "That was such a great moment, too. So many great memories on this court."

    Top-ranked Novak Djokovic also opened his campaign with a straight-sets victory, beating Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Mayer is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, losing to Djokovic at that stage last year. But he was never in danger of springing another stunner following Rafael Nadal's first-round exit a day earlier.

    Djokovic took a 3-0 lead in the first set and broke for a 6-5 lead in the second to take control. He served out the match to love before saluting the Centre Court crowd with a fist pump.

    "It was a big pleasure again performing here on Centre Court in front of the packed crowd," Djokovic said. "For the first round, it was tricky. ... I think (Mayer's) game is really well suited for grass, so it took a lot of effort."

    For Williams, this was a chance to put the focus back on tennis following the verbal jousting with Sharapova over their private lives ? and comments about an Ohio rape case for which she had to apologize ? and she took full advantage.

    As usual on grass, the top-ranked Williams dominated with her hard serve, winning the first set without dropping a point on her service game. Her main weapon let her down only at the start of the second set, when Minella took a 2-0 lead after Williams double-faulted on break point.

    She was one point from going down 3-0 but then won 15 of the next 18 points to take a 4-2 lead, and broke again to wrap up the victory.

    "I feel like I was a little rusty for some reason today," Williams said. "I don't feel like I played my best. I felt really upset when I lost my serve in the second set. With that being said, I think Mandy played really well. I thought she was really mixing up her shots, mixing up her game. It wasn't an easy match for me. I'm a little excited I was able to play a tough match and to get through it."

    Much of the pre-tournament talk was about Williams and Sharapova, the two top players in the game who are on opposite sides of the draw and can't meet before the final.

    "It hasn't been a distraction. Like I said, I'm just here to focus on the tennis," Williams said. "I'm just here to play Wimbledon. It's the premier tournament in the world, of the year, so that's what's most important. ... We're playing on opposite days, so we don't really see each other."

    Williams improved her career record to 68-8 at the All England Club and extended her career-best winning streak to 32 matches, which included her second French Open title.

    "I don't think about it," Williams said, referring to her streak. "Every single time I step out on the court it's a new match."

    Kimiko Date-Krumm, the 42-year-old Japanese veteran, had an even easier time getting past an opponent. She needed just 44 minutes to complete a romp over Carina Witthoeft, an 18-year-old German less than half her age and making her Grand Slam debut.

    Date-Krumm is the second-oldest player to win a match at Wimbledon after Martina Navratilova, who was 47 when she reached the second round in 2004.

    Sixth-seeded Li Na of China also cruised into the second round, beating Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-1.

    Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion, was knocked out in straight sets by 135th-ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium on Monday ? the Spaniard's first loss in the opening round of any Grand Slam event.

    In contrast, most early matches on Tuesday went according to plan.

    Eighth-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro made a winning return to Grand Slam competition, defeating Albert Ramos of Spain 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 after sitting out the French Open because of respiratory problems. No. 12 Kei Nishikori of Japan and No. 13 Tommy Haas of Germany won in straight sets, but No. 16 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany wasted a two-set lead against Ivan Dodig of Croatia and then had to retire in the fifth, citing the flu.

    Microsoft came out beating the drum for cloud services and restrictive online requirements when it announced the Xbox One at the end of May. Since then, Redmond has completely flip-flopped on its online requirements and used game restrictions, but the Xbox Live Cloud service hasn?t been harmed in the process. Even though the Xbox One won?t require you to connect to the internet, individual games on the platform most certainly will.

    With the launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft will be making Xbox Live Cloud services available to game developers. ?Cloud? is obviously a very nebulous term used in marketing speak, but it has real benefits to both developers and gamers alike. Over 300,000 servers worldwide can be allocated dynamically in service of both multiplayer and single-player games. Sure, the Xbox Live Cloud can work as online storage for game assets, but it?s much more than that. By offering server-side computation as well, Microsoft?s ubiquitous cloud offering gives developers affordable tools that they just didn?t have in previous generations.

    Jon Shiring, an engineer at Respawn Entertainment, took to his company?s blog to speak about the benefits of the Xbox Live Cloud. In detail, Shiring explains the problems that go along with having player-hosted game servers, and why having affordable dynamically scaling dedicated servers is a huge benefit for multiplayer games. Microsoft?s Azure-based Xbox Live Cloud allows developers like Respawn to improve AI, remove unfair player advantages, speed up matchmaking, and dedicate all resources on the local machine to improve the visuals and frame rate.

    Since Respawn?s game Titanfall is effectively multiplayer-only, it requires an always-on internet connection. Despite the fact that Microsoft is publicly slinking away from internet requirements, some games on the Xbox One will still demand an internet connection to function at all. Obviously, the benefits Microsoft originally laid out for its Xbox Live Cloud service can and will thrive in this ecosystem.

    Single-player games will definitely benefit as well. Computation-intensive sections of a game, like large dynamic backgrounds, can be handled in the cloud while latency-sensitive portions like aiming and damage calculations can happen in real-time on the console itself. For example, a developer could use the cloud to render an accurate depiction of what the night sky looks like where you live while the console itself has more resources freed up to improve moment-to-moment gameplay.

    Fundamentally, the fact that Microsoft is offering cheap access to cloud storage and computing for all participating developers is a win for everyone. This initiative lets developers expand game worlds, takes a substantial load off of the Xbox One?s CPU and GPU, and has the added benefit (for Microsoft) of keeping most people connected to the internet for all of these features. The Xbox One will need an internet connection for a nontrivial amount of games, and that?s okay. Provided the gaming industry learned its lesson about failing gracefully from the SimCity debacle, the Xbox One could have a significant edge over PS4 if the Xbox Live Cloud delivers on its promises.

    This week the city of Los Angeles sent a cease-and-desist letter to ride-sharing app companies Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. The city claims that these services are "rogue taxis" that are "bypassing all safety regulations created to protect riders and drivers." But this isn't the first time that this town has gone after the unregulated four-wheeled menace. This crackdown on unlicensed taxis in the City of Angels is nearly identical to a battle that raged a century ago ? without all the iPhones and whatnot, of course.

    At a time when it appeared that Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez?s advisors had planned to concede the battle in the court of public opinion, his lawyer has broken a prior vow of silence.

    Attorney Michael Fee has issued a statement attacking media reports indicating that a warrant has been issued for Hernandez?s arrest on obstruction of justice charges.? Via Wesley Lowery of the Boston Globe, Fee said that Hernandez has been ?the subject of a relentless flood of rumors, misinformation and false reports in the media.?

    Fee added that the supposedly false reports ?include repeated publication of supposedly confirmed report an arrest warrant had been issued for Aaron, a report exposed as untrue.?

    ?None of [the] false reports come from official sources and we appreciate the professionalism and restraint shown by the Bristol County DA,? Fee adds.

    For starters, how does Fee know that the ?false reports? aren?t coming from ?official sources.?? And precisely what is an ?official source??

    While we have been careful to point out that media reports attributed to unnamed law-enforcement sources should be regarded with skepticism because the unnamed law-enforcement sources may not know the truth or may be selling an untrue version of it for strategic reasons, Fee has no way of knowing that ?officials sources? (whatever they are) haven?t been spreading misinformation.

    And if Fee is going to paint with a belated broad brush in disputing the various reports that have created an unflattering tapestry for Hernandez, he needs to back it up with concrete details.? Does he deny that Hernandez destroyed his cell phone?? Does he deny that Hernandez destroyed his home-surveillance system?? Does he deny that Hernandez hired a cleaning crew to ?scrub? his house the day after the murder of Odin Lloyd.

    It?s not enough, at this stage of the game, to complain generally about untrue reports.? Fee needs to list the reports he claims are false, and he needs to explain why they?re false.

    But that won?t happen.? Fee says he?ll have no further comment.

    Until, of course, his next comment.

The doodle is an homage to the great Catalan architect ? and pioneering modernist ??Antoni Gaud?, who was born on June 25, 1852, in Reus, Catalonia, exactly 161 years ago Tuesday.?

    It is hard to understate Gaudi's impact on the world of modern art. UNESCO, which has placed several of Gaudi's buildings on its World Heritage List, from the Casa Bellesguard to the Casa Batll?, describes his contributions as helping shape 19th and 20th century?architecture and building technology:?

    Gaud??s work exhibits an important interchange of values closely associated with the cultural and artistic currents of his time, as represented in el Modernisme of Catalonia. It anticipated and influenced many of the forms and techniques that were relevant to the development of modern construction in the 20th century.

    Gaud? was apparently a relatively sickly child, but his convalescence, according to one online biography,?allowed him to spend "many hours contemplating nature, drawing lessons that he was to apply later in his architecture." In the late 1860s, he moved to Barcelona, initially to study teaching, but by 1873, he was enrolled in architecture school.?

    Upon his graduation in 1878, Gaud? established his own architecture firm, and set about creating the works that would make his name. Perhaps his most famous early work is the Casa Vicens, a private residence in?the?Gr?cia?district of Barcelona. In the 1880s, he also completed work on the?G?ell Pavilions, which was named after?Eusebi G?ell,?Gaud?'s most steadfast patron.?

    But as the website of the?Gaud? Experi?ncia museum puts it, it was in 1890 that Gaud? began to perfect "his understanding of architectural space and the applied arts, giving his work unique and unsuspected qualities that stood out from the other Modernist architecture of his day. These were Gaud?'s mature years in which a succession of master works appeared: Bellesguard Villa, Park G?ell, the restoration of Mallorca Cathedral, the church of the Col?nia G?ell, Casa Batll?, La Pedrera, and the Nativity fa?ade of the Sagrada Familia."

    Gaud? received a commission to work on the?Sagrada Familia in 1883, and the grand church, with its sharp, perforated steeples and mosaic-dappled facade, became a kind of fixation for?Gaud?, who labored over the building for more than 40 long years.?

    Gaud? died on June 10, 1926, after being hit by a tram in?Barcelona. Still, his legacy lives on, as does the Sagrada Familia, which remains unfinished even today, almost a century later. Earlier this year, in an interview with 60 Minutes, Gaud?'s?biographer Gijs van Hensbergen was asked to define the one thing that made?Gaud? a great artist.?

    "The capacity to see space in a totally different way," Mr. van Hensbergen answered,?"to make space explode, to see a building as a sculpture rather than just as a place to live in or a roof over your head. He's someone who reinvented the language of architecture which no other architect has ever managed to do."?
