Amanda Palmer Postpones Shows to Be With Friend Battling Cancer

Goth cabaret singer Amanda Palmer has announce she is cancelling her 2013 touring commitments to be with her "best friend" C. Anthony Martignetti, who is battling cancer.

Palmer has spoke often about Martignetti and her relationship with him and even penned an introduction for his book of short stories.

In a lengthy post this afternoon on her site entitled "cancer. canceling. postponing. waiting. growing." she explained her decision.

"this is really, really hard for me to tell you," Palmer wrote. "i feel like i'm letting a lot of people down. if you know me, you'll know that in 13 years of touring, i've almost never canceled a single engagement. it's not my style. i take my professional commitments really seriously. even if i'm sick, i play."

Palmer said that because she also takes her friendships seriously, she'll stick by Martignetti as he "is really sick and his future is uncertain." The singer -- who said Fiona Apple's recent decision to cancel a tour to be with her ailing dog helped put things in perspective -- said while she knows the decision will affect her band, her road crew and particularly fans who made travel plans to see her live, "all i can do is ask for your forgiveness and understanding... and ask you to wait. i will come."

The singer said she considered trying to honor the tour dates or curtailing some dates and still be near for her friend in need but said Apple's blog post regarding her dog struck a chord. "it's not enough, when this happens, to be 'on call' to be a flight away at any moment," Palmer said. "it is only enough to stay close, to join the story in real time."

Acknowledging she'd be touring behind an album that "got stellar reviews" with ticket sales strong, Palmer said the decision was clear when she returned home from Thanksgiving and met with Martignetti and "felt the true weight of what he's about to go through... twelve weeks of treatment with no guarantees... it was obvious. i just had to stay and be here."

Palmer -- who earlier this year released her studio album Theatre is Evil -- also cited the sudden death in October of her friend Becca Rosenthal as another reason to stay with her friend.

"i didn't have the luxury of saying goodbye," she said. "it was just the end. bam, like that. and the one thing i've found we all feel, me and all of her other friends, was a pang of regret that we didn't do more, spend more time, connect more."

The musician added she considered it a "blessing" to have the "luxury" of nixing the trek to stay with her friend. "and I know, i'd give anything. any forward momentum in my career, any number of record sales, any amount of success. anything. because if i wasn't willing to do that: what is my life even worth? why bother to be successful? if i can't throw it away and sit by my friend when he's this sick... who the fuck would i be? really... who? so i'm canceling."

After asking the fans again for their forgiveness in the decision, Palmer relayed some of the consequences from nixing the upcoming tour dates. Tickets for original dates Australia and New Zealand dates will be honored for the rescheduled shows with refunds available at points of purchase. She will not be performing at the Mona Foma festival in Tasmania.

As for Europe, Palmer said they're not certain "when these shows will be rescheduled" but plans to reschedule the tour within a year. The only silver lining is that Palmer will still be performing a Prince tribute at Terminal 5 in New York City on New Year's Eve with her group, which is "going to 'purple rain' the shit out of all y'all."

On hearing the news, most of the comments to the news were very positive and commending Palmer for her decision.
